On February 6th, 2023, a series of powerful earthquakes struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, leaving behind a trail of devastation that forever changed the lives of millions. The tremors, measuring 7.8 and 7.5 in magnitude, unleashed unimaginable destruction, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of individuals and injuring countless others. Homes were pulverised, livelihoods shattered, and communities ripped apart.

We remember and commemorate each life lost to this tragedy, the loved ones left behind, and the enduring grief etched into the hearts of countless families. We honour the courage and resilience of those who survived, bearing the physical and emotional scars of that fateful day.

The earthquake displaced millions from their homes, forcing them to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar surroundings. For some, a sense of normalcy remains elusive, yet they press forward, searching for ways to return to their hometowns and reclaim a semblance of their former lives. Their yearning for stability and community resonates deeply within us.

Here in New Zealand, the Turkiye and New Zealand Cultural Society (TRNZCS) felt the tremors not just geologically, but also within our hearts. We are a community deeply connected to our Turkish roots, and the pain of our fellow citizens resonated deeply. But amidst the grief, a spirit of unwavering solidarity emerged.

Reacting with Unwavering Compassion and Action:

TRNZCS, true to its mission of supporting the Turkish community in New Zealand, sprang into action without hesitation. We understood the urgent need for aid and mobilized our resources to provide whatever support we could. Our efforts weren't limited to just fundraising events, although those played a crucial role. We went above and beyond to:

  • Set up stalls and sell a diverse range of items, transforming everyday commerce into an avenue for meaningful contribution. The spirit of generosity resonated through every transaction, fueled by the shared desire to help those in dire need.
  • Become a bridge between businesses and aid organizations, leveraging our connections to channel critical resources where they were needed most. This collaborative approach ensured aid reached those who needed it most effectively.
  • Advocate for the earthquake victims on the political stage, submitting a petition to the New Zealand parliament requesting a temporary 2-year work visa for affected individuals. This initiative aimed to empower them to rebuild their lives with dignity and self-reliance.
  • Amplify awareness through the media, reaching out to New Zealand media outlets to shine a light on the ongoing struggles in Turkey. By sharing the stories of those impacted, we aimed to inspire empathy and encourage wider support.
  • Establish countless Givealittle pages, providing a platform for individuals to contribute directly to relief efforts. This grassroots approach ensured every contribution, no matter how big or small, made a tangible difference.

The funds raised by TRNZCS were meticulously channeled towards reputable organisations directly involved in relief efforts on the ground. We knew that every dollar contributed could bring vital assistance to those struggling to rebuild their lives. It was a privilege to be a part of this collective effort, demonstrating the true meaning of solidarity in the face of adversity.

The Strength of Unity: Why TRNZCS Matters Now More Than Ever:

The earthquake may have struck a year ago, but the road to recovery remains long and arduous. Many families are still grappling with loss, displacement, and the immense task of rebuilding their lives. In these challenging times, the significance of TRNZCS as a community hub becomes even more apparent.

We provide a space for our members to connect, share experiences, and find solace in shared cultural identity. We offer support and resources, and most importantly, a sense of belonging and understanding. TRNZCS embodies the enduring spirit of resilience that defines both Turkish and New Zealand cultures.

Looking Forward: A Call to Continued Action:

As we mark this somber anniversary, let us remember the resilience of the human spirit and the power of collective action. The earthquake may have tested us, but it also strengthened our resolve to stand together. TRNZCS remains committed to supporting our Turkish brothers and sisters, both here in New Zealand and abroad.

We encourage everyone to remember the earthquake's victims and continue to support ongoing relief and recovery efforts. Even a small act of kindness can make a world of difference in someone's life. Together, we can ensure that hope and compassion prevail in the face of adversity.

Kia Kaha. Birlikte Daha Güçlüyüz. Together we are stronger.
